Art of Ajrakh

In 2016, I traveled to Kutch, Gujarat, to study blockprinting with Indian artisans at Somaiya Kala Vidya.

Ajrakh is characterized by intricate geometric patterns of blue (indigo), red (alizarin), black (iron) and white, created through a combination of resist and mordant techniques. See the process and design, below, produced with traditional wooden blocks and natural dyes.

To learn more about this textile tradition, which originated in Sind, Pakistan, in the 16th century, click here. Special thanks to my teachers, Irfan Anwar Khatri, Soyab Abdul Karim Khatri, Aakib Ibrahim Khatri, and Mustafa Khalid Khatri.
